My favorite dynamic duo is at it again…this time they have delved into the world of fragrance and created their own perfume called Nirvana Black and Nirvana White.
Elizabeth and James Nirvana White and Nirvana Black, $70 each, sephora.com.
In an exclusive interview with Harpers Bazaar, they discuss the inspiration behind their fashion brand’s first foray into fragrance and the role that scent plays in their day-to-day.
What was the inspiration for the fragrance?
Mary-Kate: Fragrance is incredibly personal, which led us down the path of exploring a modern, intimate moment and what it means today. For us, that moment is about sensuality. We chose notes that reflect those feelings for us. A mix of sandalwood, vanilla and violet for Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black. And a feminine blend of peony, muguet and musk for Elizabeth and James Nirvana White.
Who is the woman that wears these scents?
Ashley: Mary-Kate and I created this fragrance for the modern woman. She wants it all—independence, career, love, and, most importantly, the option to choose. We’re not telling her what to wear or how to wear it. We’re offering a palette for her to explore and make her own.
What role does perfume play in your lives?
Ashley: Fragrance is part of everyone’s daily routine—it’s in our shampoo, face lotion, lip gloss, etc.
Mary-Kate: I mix and layer my scents and tend to go for a more masculine scent.
What was each of your signature scents prior to creating these fragrances?
Mary-Kate: I’ve always been drawn to oils. I love how they seep into your skin and change with your natural scent.
Ashley: Scent is all around us—it’s in our beauty and body products, as well as candles and flowers. I surround myself with the scents I love such as peony and rose.
