Summer’s 10 Best Gloss Shades To Try


Top U.K. pro makeup artist Nina Westbury has made up everyone from Boy George to Debbie Harry.


And whether making up celebrities for the red carpet or working with customers in department stores, she’s discovered through the years of testing, the most flattering gloss shades for all skin tones. Here are 10 of her all-star picks for the best summer lip glosses.

1. Dior Addict Fluid Sticks, $36

“I believe that Dior may have made the perfect lip gloss! The packaging and want alone are fantastic but it’s the hydrating weightless formula that I really love. I find that they’re so comfortable to wear, I forget I’m wearing them. I remember recently catching my reflection in the mirror a few hours later and was surprised to see this striking lip color still on. They are a hybrid lipstick/lip gloss and are packed full of pigment.” Her favorite shades are 869 Vie D’Enfer (below) a lovely brick red which looks stunning with simple eye makeup.


575 Wonderland (below) is a strong fuchsia that works brilliantly with a summer tan, some turquoise eyeliner, mascara and groomed brows.


2. Nars Larger Than Life Lip Gloss in Annees Follees, $32

“This is a very clever lip gloss colour indeed. It not only has the ability to complement your tan perfectly it also makes your teeth look whiter and your eyes brighter. It can be worn alone or I love popping this gloss over pink lipsticks leaving an almost electric violet hue.”


3. YSL Gloss Volupté in color Terriblement Fuchsia, $35

“It shouts wear me, it’s summer!” Not only is the packaging like a work of art, this bright colour can be worn on the shores of Ibiza and take you to the club afterwards.


202 Jersey Rose (below) is another favorite. It’s a rich velvet baby pink that is fabulous for women that prefer a softer look.


4. Estée Lauder Pure Colour Lip Shine, $26

Estée Lauder’s Bronze Goddess collections offer some fanastic alternatives to a traditonal lip gloss. Westbury loves the new Pure Colour Lip Shine. It’s a high shine chubby pencil that comes in two stunning colors: 01 Mandarin (first one below) and 02 Luscious Plum (second one below). “These two complement each other perfectly or can be worn alone.”



5. Shiseido Lacquer Gloss in Lust, $27

“Is a wonderful fire engine red.” Westbury says the application want has a slight curve, ensuring you apply the perfect amount.


6. MAC Mineralize Glass, $26

“These new glosses come in some simply divine colours. Lovingly Yours (first one below) and Tender (second one below) are very simple wearable colours. They are so pretty, I use them for summertime weddings.”



7. Clinique Long Last Gloss Wear in Goldspun, $19

A beautiful champagne gold lip gloss. “What I love about this shade is that it looks pretty on any skin tone. You an wear it alone or over your favorite red lipstick to give you a fabulous alternative to summer coral.”


8. Guerlain Gloss d’Enfer Intense Colour & Bare Lip Sensation in Stardust, $32

Is a clear gloss that gives lips an iridescent veil. It hydrates and shapes with minerals and botanical oils, leaving a plumping effect. Nina says it can be worn alone or over your favorite lipstick.


9. Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in Rose Shimmer, $20

“This is a smooth hydrating, lip gel that smells delicious, like sweet vanilla. These glosses are highly addictive and once you start using them you won’t look back. It’s a perfect everday gloss, great for any age, at the beach or for a night out.”


10. Lancôme Lip Lover in Rose Attrape Coeur, $29

Combines a lip balm and gloss and delivers eight hours of moisture. “These are very easy-wearing and can be worn alone or over lipsticks. I especially liked 316 Rose Attrape Coeur, it looks so pretty with a warm-bronze smoky eye, with a hint of gold shimmer on the lid.”
