Once again the espadrille makes a powerful comeback this Summer combining super comfortable appeal with classic cool—from simple canvas ladies flats to glamorous wedge sandals.
Quick history lesson: espadrilles have been made in Pyrennean Catalonia (Spain) and Oceania region since the 14th century at least, and there are shops in the Basque country (Spain) still in existence that have been making espadrilles for over a century.
Originally made in France and Spain, espadrilles were worn by everyone from peasants to priests to 14th century Spanish soldiers.
Espadrilles are normally casual flats, but sometimes high heeled shoes originating from the Pyrenees. They usually have a canvas or cotton fabric upper and a flexible sole made of jute rope. The jute rope sole is the defining characteristic of an espadrille; which sets it apart from other shoes in style.
